3 Essential Considerations Before Getting A Storage Unit

Posted on: 4 March 2019

Have you decided that you just have too much stuff? Are you thinking about clearing up space by putting some things into storage for a while? Although selling or donating unwanted or unused items is certainly an option, it's not necessarily the best option for everyone. This is especially true if you're planning on moving to a larger home in the near future and simply need somewhere to keep your extra things in the interim. As there are quite a few storage options, it can be difficult to decide which unit or units to choose. By taking some things into consideration, you'll be able to make the decision more easily. A few of these things include the following.

Heated or unheated: Heated storage tends to cost more than unheated storage and you might be wondering why you should pay the difference. If all you're doing is storing extra clothes, dishes, or similar items, it may not matter much whether you get an outdoor unit or one that has climate control. But if you're storing furniture, especially older wooden furniture, getting a heated storage unit is a good idea. Wooden furniture can be quite susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity. Putting furniture into a storage unit without climate control could result in damage that ultimately destroys the piece or pieces.

Amount being stored: How much is being stored is just as important as knowing exactly what needs to be stored. A king-sized bedroom set is obviously going to take up more room than just a few boxes of books, for instance. If you're only storing one or two furniture items, it might make more financial sense to get a small heated storage unit and a small unheated unit, rather than paying for a large storage unit that's heated.

Length of storage: The length of time that you'll be needing the storage unit can also be an important consideration. If it's just a brief storage period, you should be able to get away with a smaller and more tightly packed storage unit. On the other hand, if it might actually be a couple of years before you are able to retrieve your belongings from storage, you might want a slightly larger unit. This is so that you can more easily access your belongings while in storage and can add to the items being stored, if necessary. For instance, you might decide to keep holiday decorations in the unit and having to pull half the stuff out in order to access the boxes of decor can be annoying and tiresome.
